Working together for standards The Web Standards Project

The Worldwide Web Consortium has announced a new Working Group dedicated to improving client-side application development.

The charter, written by Dean Jackson, lays out the mission, background and scope of the group.

The mission of the W3C Web API Working Group is to develop specifications that enable improved client-side application development on the Web. This includes the development of programming interfaces to be made available in a Web client.

Expect to see first draft specifications for HTTP functionality by December with candidate recommendations by early 2006. That will be followed by recommendations for timed events, drag and drop, and many more.

As well as working internally with the W3C DOM Working Group, the Web API Working Group will also work together with the Web Standards Project, specifically the DOM Scripting Task Force (that’s us!). As the charter states:

Education, outreach and testing also play an important role in improving the current state of Web applications.

The existence of this Working Group is very good news indeed. It is good news for the W3C, good news for the WaSP DOM Scripting Task Force and, most of all, it’s good news for developers.

Expect to see a Web API blog in the not too distant future which will have tips’n'tricks for using JavaScript in a standards-based, accessible way.
